Gardentown Railroad News

About the Story

Books-13.jpg

“Creating an outdoor garden railroad has been an adventure of fun and challenges, especially when the resident wildlife acts as though they own the property. This story celebrates the tenth year of operation. It includes the background inspiration behind the concept together with photos of the railroad details and visitors from near and distant zip codes.”

Visitors of ages three to eighty and over, come to enjoy the garden landscapes, meet whimsical garden critters and play with the trains. Some relive their childhood memories with model trains. Others create new memories while using the remote control to send the passenger and freight trains around Gardentown.

From Chester’s Shanty:

JDM33943.jpg

“Chester Crenshaw is known mostly by the townies as the affable, quiet recluse who lives in the old, railroad tool shanty, where he enjoys the solitary life. One of his best friends is his tired old Golden Lab, Harley. Chester doesn’t take well to wasting time with small talk about politics and most everything else except affairs of the railroad, canoeing, fishing and hunting small game. Just about every day around five o’clock, he sits with Harley on the front porch, smiling and waving at passengetever train rolls by. It’s a curious sight that makes them wonder who he is. He never seems to age. Chester’s dilapidated shanty has undergone major upgrades since we visited the back country of Gardentown last year. A rooftop solar energy collector is ready to provide electricity for a future backyard hot tub.”

From the Little Red Schoolhouse:

“The story’s the same in all towns regardless of size. Elected officials campaign on promises to support education but decimate the school maintenance budget once in office. Such is the case with the little Red Schoolhouse. A group of citizen volunteers finally took it upon themselves to repair the roof, build new front entry steps and repaint the sign and some trim. Repair and fresh paint for the window shutters are scheduled for the next school year.”
